The long journeys to join (in particular) our resorts are always an opportunity to take an interest in driving aid applications. If Waze is now known and adopted by a very large community, the Coyote service also continues its way.We took advantage of our holidays in Portugal to compare these two services on a few thousand kilometers.
We are very recently tested the Coyote on Android Auto application, it is now time to make a "versus" of the two tenors that are Waze and Coyote. To compare the two services, we crossed France, direction Portugal.
A lire aussi: On a testé Coyote sur Android Auto : faut-il y adhérer avant de prendre la route ?The two services were quite timid efficiency in Portugal.Squares of the premises, the mobile telephony packages including unlimited data were far too expensive and coyote membership, a paid service too, was not a priority.Result: rather poor respective Portuguese communities. But things evolve slowly in the north and the center of the country, mainly in favor of Waze.
D.Nogueira for ClubicThere are subjects on which the Coyote service remains the reference, namely the alerts of fixed radars. In this case, in Portugal (as in Spain), these are still designated in this way and not as our politically correct "danger zones".
D.Nogueira for ClubicThe control device is materialized on the card at its precise location. On this point, no doubt, Coyote largely takes our preference, for a simple reason: as long as you run too quickly as the radar approaches, an alert (a not very pleasant beep) is heard to encourage you to lift your foot. This will avoid the famous and unfortunate 135 km/h instead of 130 km/h.The same is true for danger zones in France, except that they extend over 4 km where an alert in Spain or Portugal is done a 500 meters upstream.
D.Nogueira for ClubicOn the side of Waze, again the radar is materialized in its exact location, but the picto is smaller and discreet than at Coyote. And here, no survival alert at the approach.A difference in operation that also applies to section radars, as we have been able to meet them in France. As long as you run in the area, the Coyote app basically tells you the speed to be respected and the length of the area.In case of exceeding, there too, a beep is heard.
D.Nogueira for ClubicWaze alerts you once, then nothing. Finally, not exactly: a progression bar appears well on the left part of the screen to materialize the zones of section radars, but it is not as effective as the sound alert of the Coyote app.
We tell you without detour, subscribing to a subscription on the Coyote application is far from being an error, whether by a monthly commitment or an annual package which will be amortized to the first offense. The prices are indicated in the image below.Recall that the Extend formulas allow you to take advantage of the app on Android Auto and Apple Carplay.Anyway, despite the observation that will follow, we remain convinced that the two applications can be complementary if you have the budget.
Crédit Coyote GroupIf we tend to recommend a mobile subscription, Coyote has told us that the boxes still represent two-thirds of subscriptions.Perhaps more for very long, because the application represents the biggest growth. The Coyote community has 5 million users in Europe and, according to the company, more than 80% of them are active daily. On average, the service would record 13 alerts per second throughout Europe. The detailed figures for France will not have been communicated to us.In fact, the company does not communicate at all on the communities by country. It's like that, even if it's a shame. And if we said in particular in our first article that we must fear that the Coyote community is crumbling due to the success of Waze, for Kevin Vaney, is inaccurate: “The number of scouts is maintained. The market of physical boxes that we market has matured, which is why we are working on new avenues to continue to seduce our users and send others. There is a high potential on the side of the mobile application and we see it in the subscriptions subscribed by our users.Nevertheless, we will continue to work on the evolution of our dedicated boxes, in particular to meet the needs of road professionals, but not only.", The Coyote Press Relations Officer said.
Crédit WazeFor its part, Waze claims 14 million users just in France. This growing community allows Waze to provide increasingly precise studies on the trips of its users. The same goes for Coyote, also an aggregator and supplier of data for third parties.
Beyond all this data, there is field reality. If in France the Coyote community is still very active, our experience shows that the Wazers are now taking precedence over Coyote scouts, especially here on the roads of Portugal.
D.Nogueira for ClubicEven if the Coyote application has not missed all the dangers on the road, the examples in favor of Waze have multiplied on the nearly 5,000 km of test (including 3,500 km in Portugal). In the photo below, we approach a broken down vehicle, reported well upstream by Waze.
D.Nogueira for Clubic D.Nogueira for ClubicNo alert is relayed by Coyote at this moment to warn us of the accident and the slowdown. We must correct the shot in a few clicks on the Coyote application, and unfortunately for it, the examples of the genre were so numerous on our trips that we could make it a whole photo slideshow.
D.Nogueira for ClubicD.Nogueira for ClubicAbove, another example of a well-reported event on Waze but absent from Coyote.Likewise, where Waze signals the work zone, there is nothing on Coyote.Ditto below, where the accident area is only declared by Waze, which also indicates the presence of the police a little further.
D.Nogueira for ClubicIn the capture below, the absence of a Coyote scout makes you miss the presence of a vehicle stopped on the bottom side ... Fortunately, we were able to count on the Wazers. Here again, we will only need a few clicks to correct this, as a good scout that we are.
D.Nogueira for ClubicThe massive influx, from the first week of August, of tourists, French, Belgians, Luxembourg and Swiss allowed the Coyote application to rise in quality. In the photo opposite, 50 scouts would be around us.
D.Nogueira for ClubicAn interesting score, which almost represents double the users observed in the previous weeks. This increase sometimes allows the Coyote community to do better than that of Waze, as we can see below: no alert is made by Waze, while Coyote displays in large on the screen of our mobile the vehicle stoppedon the bottom side.
D.Nogueira for ClubicThe readability of the speed to be observed is one of the other Coyote strengths, where Waze displays a small bubble not always very easy to read. With the added bonus of the indication of the number of scouts having confirmed the alert, as well as the associated period. This makes a real difference for the driver, who always wants to know more about the indications delivered in real time.
D.Nogueira for ClubicConsequence in this case: we just have to validate the alert on Coyote and, at the same time, declare it on the Waze application. For the latter, we could have used the voice command, but this would not have been possible on the Coyote application since voice recognition is not yet available.
D.Nogueira for ClubicD.Nogueira for ClubicOverall, on Portuguese roads the Waze application was more efficient and more reliable during these three weeks and 3,500 kilometers of testing.Especially in the last two weeks of July where the community, visibly foreign, was still absent.
In August, due to the presence of tourists from France and the Benelux, it happened that experience is reversed and that the expertise of the Coyote community takes over.Above, a photo illustrating for the second time the reporting of a mobile radar by Coyote, but absent from the Waze application.Yep, they have these scouts to identify the small box on the green background of the landscape! On the other hand, Waze signals the presence of the police in the distance.
D.Nogueira for ClubicTo conclude this duel, let's finally be interested in the navigation functions of the two applications. If Coyote is above all a brand known for its driving aid tools, we must (in our view) not lose sight of the fact that the firm must also develop its guidance functions offered on the mobile application and the boxescalled "Nav".A point on which we have exchanged a lot with the company which favorably welcomed our feedback, but which also specifies an important point for them: Coyote focuses its efforts on "alert", its DNA.
D.Nogueira for ClubicD.Nogueira for ClubicIn fact, the first criticism that can be made to the Coyote application - that some would see as an advantage - lies in its very minimalist display.Whether on the mobile application or on Android Auto, the Coyote cartography design seems to be really dated.Information on the streets and roads around us is very ... very limited.Do not expect to use it to locate yourself, in any case not in a village in northern Portugal like ours. And if Waze does not have all the street names of the patelin, the app is still better by displaying much more information on so -called or major places.
D.Nogueira for ClubicAnd what about the route calculation options, much more detailed on Waze?Coyote naturally offers several routes to reach your destination. The app also offers to avoid highways, tolls or non -coated roads, but do not count on it to give you an idea of the cost of tolls.Waze does it, and goes even further by sometimes offering automatically to roll a few more minutes to lower the cost of tolls. On the other hand, we cannot say that the costs are correct to the nearest cents.Especially in Portugal where, to traditional tolls, are added the famous porticos called "Scut".On some highways, these can sometimes increase the bill of several euros.
D.Nogueira for ClubicD.Nogueira for ClubicThere are also exclusive functions in Waze, such as sharing a trip with a loved one.Even more interesting as part of the holidays in "discovery" mode, the possibility of clicking on a point on the map to get there.A function that we are particularly fond of to evolve from a beach or forest spot to another without worrying about addresses. We diszoom, we observe, we click and let's go!
D.Nogueira for ClubicFinally, we have also noticed that Waze was the only one of two applications to alert us with a specificity linked to the express way IP4, very used in our region. On it, it is mandatory to light the cross lights, including day.Admittedly, a sign is present at each entry on the IP4, but this small visual and sound alert (a small ding is heard) is welcome. This is a point on which Coyote could work with its partner cartographer here (which has in the base of all this information) to complete its driving assistance functions.
D.Nogueira for ClubicIn the same way, the route calculation option according to your desired arrival time is a small gadget available on Waze which can be very practical. Not infallible, especially in the Paris region during peak hours, but practical. You will also have noticed: During our test, we were unable to assess the qualities of traffic information on these two applications. We have not crossed any sufficiently important traffic to generate specific route calculations.
You will understand, the foreign community had to share with us the roads of Portugal so that the alerts on coyote are more numerous and (sometimes much) more effective. If none of the two apps made flawless people on the thousands of kilometers traveled, we are comfortable to say that the Wazers are generally one step ahead of Portuguese territory.
D.Nogueira for ClubicIn the same way, the Waze application is also more versatile, more aesthetic and richer in functionalities. Some might prefer Coyote for its ease of use, but this is not really our case.A point that we have again shared with the communications manager, who explained to us that many developments will enrich the experience of the scouts. But society does not yet seem determined to turn away from its primary profession, which are alerts linked "to driving aids".
We are rather the type to want to always want more, especially on a paid application ....And you, what do you think ?
